Our Glowpearian this quarter is Madison based Steven Knurr. Steven is in marketing at a Wisconsin technology consulting firm focusing on healthcare, retail, and manufacturing sectors.
Using his creative talents Steven developed an impressive urban greenhouse that is technology driven. It blends seamlessly with his 'up and coming' neighbourhood, where 'pour over' coffee, fixed geared bikes, and backyard chicken coups are the norm.
"Killing plants was second nature to me. I would, like many folks, fall in love with the idea of freshly scrubbed air and a beautiful aesthetic of an indoor window garden. And like most, I turned into a caulous killer; denying my poor plants water until they'd give up the ghost." Steven recalls.
"There had to be a better way!"
"With a few meters of flexible tubing, a strong WiFi connection, and a WEMO Maker switch connected to a solenoid valve, I solved my garden hydration problem in one fell swoop! Over the last year a proper greenhouse mixed with grow lights and plenty of Google searches about pepper cultivation has advanced a hobby into a full blown passion!"
Steven now has an abundance of produce, so much so he's even turning his hand to preserving techniques. With his trusty canine assistant Rapha, the sky's the limit. This desire for automation, along with a need to have raised beds to help ward off pests, led him to build his dream set up with Glowpear. Right on Steven!
